Nonprofit Mail Explained

In this blog, we’re going to discuss nonprofit postage, how you can obtain it for your nonprofit, and some best practices to get the best ROI from your mailing.

If you run a nonprofit, finding ways to cut costs is always at the top of your to-do list. One of the easiest things you can check off that list is that you’re getting the least expensive postage prices. Let’s make sure the marketing mail you send to your donors, prospective donors, colleagues, attendees, and more, has the most affordable postage using the discounts the Post Office provides.

ELIGIBLE TYPES OF NONPROFITS

The USPS considers eight different types of organizations eligible for nonprofit postage discounts. The types of organizations considered are: religious, educational, scientific, charitable, agricultural, labor, veterans, and fraternal.

APPLICATION

You’ll need to file an “Application to Mail at Nonprofit USPS Marketing Mail Prices” with the USPS. Find the application HERE. Make sure to include documentation from the IRS showing your organization is a 501(c)(3) exempt organization. Be as thorough as possible. Expect this process to take a couple of weeks. There’s no guarantee the USPS will approve you for nonprofit mailing discounts. If you’re denied, get in touch with us and we’ll happily assist.

APPROVAL

Once you are approved by the USPS, they should provide you with something called a MID number and CRID number, which we will need to enter as part of your account set up. Don’t worry, you’re in good hands!

REQUIREMENTS

Once you’re ready to start mailing, it’s important to know that the USPS requires nonprofit mailing to include at least 200 pieces, and all pieces must be identical aside from the recipient address information. Check out their six-step process to determine if your mail piece qualifies for nonprofit postage HERE. (Spoiler alert: it’s a little complicated.)
